Maha Shivaratri is an annual festival celebrated by Hindus in the honour of Lord Shiva in the Hindi month of phalgun (which lies during February or March as per the Gregorian calendar). Shiva was married to goddess Parvati on this day. Maha Shivaratri is observed by worshipping Lord Shiva, chanting prayers, meditating on ethics and virtues such as charity, honesty, forgiveness, non-injury to others.

On Maha Shivaratri, ardent devotees of Lord Shiva observe fast, keep awake all night, while others visit one of the Shiva temples or go on pilgrimage. In temples of Shiva, "Om Namah Shivaya", a scared mantra is chanted throughout the day. The festival is celebrated over three to ten days based on Hindu luni-solar calendar. This year Maha Shivaratri will be celebrated on February 21.
